POCHIN (CONTRACTORS) LTD IS AWARDED OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY CERTIFICATION

Pochin (Contractors) Ltd has been awarded a certificate of registration to OHSAS 18001 for their occupational health and safety management system. OHSAS 18001 is an internationally recognised standard for such systems.

The management system helps Pochin (Contractors) Ltd to control its occupational health and safety risks and thereby improve the company's performance.

Health, safety and environmental manager, John Stelfox, comments: "As a building contractor, employing 200 people, with a further 600 subcontractors' employees on our sites, the health and safety of workers on the sites must be of the highest priority. With this in mind, we decided to formalise Pochin's health and safety management system two years ago, to eliminate, or at least minimise, risk to employees."

"The system consists of a manual with formal procedures for tasks both on construction sites and in Head Office, for example, risk assessment and worker consultation. The procedures are supported by a number of documents such as audit report forms and work permits."

To monitor the company's progress, regular audits are carried out by site agents, senior managers, directors and safety, health and environmental advisers. Pochin (Contractors) Ltd set themselves annual health and safety targets and objectives to improve their health and safety performance. Performance is reviewed monthly with directors and the application of the system will be audited by BSI twice each year.
